Charles Hayden Planetarium Records
Charles W. Cobb Manuscripts
This collection includes two manuscripts: “The Song of the Wood Thrush”, typewritten and including corrections in pen and pencil, and three copies of “The Song of the Meadow Lark”-one handwritten, two typewritten. Additionally, there is a postcard from Cobb to his wife, Mary B Cobb, regarding one of the songs described in the manuscripts.
Chinese Birds and Fish Paintings
This collection is composed of 6 paintings. 3 depict birds and 3 depict fish. Though the original label suggests the paintings are Japanese, it has been determined that the paintings may be done on pith paper and match closely with souvenirs brought form artisans in China in the early 19th century.
Dorothy Bliss Manuscript
This collection is a typewritten manuscript written for Biology 22 at Harvard University by Dorothy Bliss, entitled "The Mechanics of Bird Flight: A Report Based on a Seminar Presented on October 14, 1947". The manuscript summarizes a lecture on bird flight mechanics, including hand-drawn diagrams in the last pages. Corrections and edits in pen are present, possibly from Bliss or Boston Society of Natural History staff member, although not certain.
Frank Bené Manuscript
This collection features a typewritten manuscript of "The Feeding and Related Behavior of Hummingbirds" and includes pencil and pen edits. It is written in a memoir format, discussing Bene's observations and research of hummingbirds. The original folder title included "ca. 1946" though this date could not be confirmed as a the date of the manuscript or acquisition year.
Frederick B. McKechnie Papers
This collection consists of field notes regarding bird observations in diary format, handwritten in ink on unlined paper and grouped by year from 1896 to 1910. Most volumes are originally bound with string, though the 1899 volume is bound into a notebook with an embossed suede cover. The volumes include newspaper clippers pertaining to ornithology and climate.
