Content Description

This scrapbook, signed at the front by Herbert E. Valentine, begins in 1883 with pencil, watercolor, and other illustrations of insects and plant life, including both close up studies and scenes. Photographs (both matted and not) and microscope cards with closer examination are added partway through. Labels for all images, drawn or not, are hand written. Some items in the scrapbook have dates and attribution but most do not. The scrapbook ends with pasted in diagrams of different types of fleas, seemingly cut out from one publication.

Biographical / Historical

Herbert Eugene Valentine (1841-1917) was a Private in Company F, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteers regiment attached to General Burnside's Brigade in the Civil War. Valentine is best known for his skteches and writings about his time during the war, and most of his sketches were of navy vessels and his locations during his service. After he mustered out in 1864, Valentine wroked as a bookkeeper at a firm in Boston and lived in West Somerville until he died in 1917. He also wrote and published a book about the history of his Regiment in the Civil War in 1896.

Smith Reynolds Library Special Collections and Archives at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, also holds papers of Valentine's. The Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts also holds papers, as does the National Archives.
