Ornithological Notebook, 1885 - 1890

 Item — Box: 1, Folder: 16

Scope and Contents

This is a small notebook with notes on different birds, outlining the family, genus, and species of each. It includes behavior and habitat notes and dates the birds have been spotted. At the end of the notebook are lists of Latin species names with their translation in English, and finally a draft of a manuscript about the "Sylvicolidae" (potentially meaning what is now the Parulidae) family of birds.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open to researchers.

As a preservation measure, some materials (one ornithological notebook with a broken binding and the Pasquaney lecture notebook with a torn cover) require the researcher to follow extra handling procedures of fragile materials.

For onsite access, researchers must schedule an appointment with the Archives as far in advance as possible; a minimum of three weeks is requested. Contact Archives@mos.org for more information.

Processing Information

This was found by Archives Intern Emily Buff in March, 2025. It was shelved with a small collection of notes by entomologist Carleton A. Shurtleff, and a loose cover of a Shurtleff journal was on this notebook, disguising it. It is clearly Reagh's as it is stamped with his name, noted to be in West Roxbury, and a study of birds.
