Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries consists primarily of the photographic negatives that Washburn donated to the Museum of Science, which represent about half of the photographs taken during his career. The negatives date from about 1926 to about 1994, and represent a variety of black-and-white formats. The images include aerial photographs of mountains, glaciers, and other geographic features; behind-the-scenes images of the cartographic and photographic processes; and snapshots of people, equipment, and locations taken in the course of various expeditions. The photographs span a wide range of locations: the Alps, Alaska and the Yukon, China, the Grand Canyon, and elsewhere. The larger-format negatives (8x10s) are mainly aerial photographs taken between 1937 and 1979; most were taken in Alaska. Also included in this subseries are a small number of photographic prints.
