Scope and Contents

This subseries documents some of Washburn’s significant mountaineering and mapping projects. Types of material represented in this subseries include: correspondence, diary transcripts, published works, shipping invoices and purchase orders, photographs, handwritten memoranda and notes, and cartographic data. The primary topics addressed in this subseries are the sale and publication of photographs and articles, speeches and lectures given by Washburn, logistical planning for mountaineering and cartographic trips, and the publication of maps. Correspondents include: The National Geographic Society, Eastman Kodak Company, and various mapping and surveying firms. The bulk of the subseries relates to two different mapping trips: Mount Kennedy (1965) and the Grand Canyon (1970s). Also included are files about earlier and later projects, including Denali (aka McKinley) and Mount Everest.

The textual materials are primarily in English. However, this collection does contain materials (primarily correspondence) in languages such as: German, Chinese, French, Russian, Japanese, Polish, and Spanish.

Conditions Governing Access

This collection is open for research with the exception of certain files that are listed as restricted. Certain files which contain sensitive legal, financial, or personal information are restricted.

As a preservation measure due to the fragile condition of some materials, access may be restricted to where only Archives staff can handle the materials.
