Series 1: Aerial Photograph Albums, 1929 - 1994, bulk: 1929 - 1979

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists of 88 albums containing aerial photographs taken by Bradford Washburn. The images were created for the purpose of the charting and cartography of mountains and mountain ranges in Alaska and Canada, the Alps, the Grand Canyon, and other locations. These are silver gelatin prints, most of which measure 8x10 inches, but some larger and smaller sizes are found throughout the albums. Each album contains roughly 100 to 150 photographs.

Arrangement

Albums 1 through 71 are arranged by negative number, following the original indexing system used by Washburn throughout his body of aerial photography work. The remaining albums that do not fall under this system of organization are arranged by date.

Processing Information

Two albums in this series are labeled “Album 33”. They contain different content and negative numbers, and the negative numbers are consecutive from the first album to the second. It is assumed that the duplication of album numbers was accidental.

Albums containing negative numbers that appear in the flight logs are noted as such.
